Car Kit: For Accidents & Tickets

Getting in an accident or getting pulled over is no fun, but it happens and oftentimes no one warns you how to deal with it until it happens. That’s not exactly helpful! This kit is going to help you feel more prepared.

In an accident (fender bender):

  • Pull over to the right side of the road safely and quickly.
  • All that is required of you at the time of the accident is to exchange insurance information. You do not have to exchange contact information because you can be contacted through your insurance company.
  • If you don’t feel safe in the situation, like the accident may be intentional, you can call  911.
  • If you are in a serious accident, you should only focus on calling 911 if possible.

In a traffic violation:

  • Pull over to the right side of the road safely and quickly.
  • You can turn off your car and roll down the window for the officer. If it is dark you should turn on the cabin lights.
  • Only grab  for your license and registration after the officer asks you for it. Remember the officers are on guard as well. You may ask the officer to show their identification.
  • Answer questions honestly and concisely.  Be polite.
  • After you have received your ticket or warning and the officer is back in his or her vehicle, you should safely merge back into traffic.

I only vaguely knew what to do when I was pulled over for the first time for an expired registration, but I managed. Even though I was confused, I felt lucky to have my confused friends with me! If I had my car kit before then I probably would have known my registration expired and avoided the ticket all together. Hope this helps!
